Embracing the Humble Approach: Building a Network of BIM Support

Updated: Jul 11, 2024

London Build Expo, 2022

I’m thrilled to have you here!

My name is Bea, and I founded BIMable to be a beacon for anyone interested in the fascinating world of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Digital Design.

The idea for BIMable was born out of a new way of working—solo freelance work. After leaving the bustling environment of a large corporate architectural office, the transition to working solo was a stark contrast. Suddenly, I was an all-in-one entity with no supporting departments, no document control, IT, or Digital Design Department. This shift led me to start building a network where we could support each other, not just with BIM questions, but with everything necessary to deliver a project: project managers, technicians, heritage specialists, BIM enthusiasts—you name it.

While building this network, a crucial question arose: How can I help? My specialty is in Digital Architecture, with a keen interest in innovation, automation, and BIM. The answer was clear: I could become the Digital Design support ‘department’ for our network. But why go solo when there are so many amazing like minded professionals out there who could help as well?

Our mission is to deliver accessible, effective, and enjoyable services that empower individuals and organizations to achieve excellence in their projects. By fostering a supportive community focused on learning and growth, BIMable aims to seamlessly integrate architectural insights with Digital expertise, pushing the boundaries of innovation and making Digital Design an indispensable tool for success.

Bridging the Gap Between Architecture and Digital Tools

As a trained architect working with BIM software, I often found myself navigating the challenging space between the world of architecture and the specialized realm of Digital environment. This gap created obstacles for architects like me who needed to engage with BIM specialists who often spoke in acronyms and complex language, making the process feel foreign and inaccessible.

These experiences highlighted the need to bridge these worlds, making the Digital world more accessible and comprehensible to all. I wanted to share my knowledge in a way that was easy to understand, without the technical jargon that often made Digital tools seem like rocket science.

Project challenges

Recently, I started working on a small project, private residential extension. Despite many years of experience using Revit, I had moments when I struggled with the software. Most of those years were spent on large commercial projects, which are quite different from small private residential jobs, especially when it comes to Revit. From the start, I struggled to create a roof or make the stairs work.

This experience serves as a great reminder that no one can claim to know everything about Revit. The software is so complex that it's impossible to master all its functionalities and tricks. Additionally, projects vary greatly, and BIM requirements can range from none to delivering digital twins and data for facilities management.

So, what did I do? I reached out to my support network. Even though I managed to solve the issue without direct help, having a sounding board was invaluable. Brainstorming and coming up with various ideas is always more productive in a group than working alone.

If you don't have your support group or are just starting your BIM journey, we would be honoured to be your support group, your BIM department.
